THE FIX IS IN!!
One of the biggest "corks" in the airflow system of the MX5 is the stock intake system. The factory did a great job of designing a wonderful intake system for the stock 2.0, and it works perfect,UNTIL you up the ante with something like a high flowing 2.5 atmospheric engine, or forced induction. Then things start to get a bit backed up, flow wise!
SOMETHING OLD, SOMETHING NEW.............
We at Dynotronics have always adhered to the old adage 'There is nothing new under the sun". So when we began looking for the solution to the intake cork, we looked around to see what was being done in other setups using the Duratec based engines to improve intake flow. We found a small manufacturer that was building what we thought was a very nice intake for the Ford Ranger with the very same engine. With an eye towards adapting these to fit the MX5, we approached them to build a slightly modified version of that unit for us. After a few prototype runs, and few engineering changes, and some midnight oil, we are happy to tell you we have the PERFECT solution for the intake crisis!
CNC IS SEXY.....
Second only to the Plenum size, the runner of an intake makes the most difference in the way the intake will perform. The runners on this manifold were designed to keep that in mind. With a small concession made for runner length, for the underhood dimensions, these runners were designed to fit the parameters of the 2.5 engine with performance as the keyword. Starting with a piece of 6061 T6 aluminum tube stock, they are CNC machined to match the 2.5 intake port and then taper down to a bell for better flow. With a finished minimum wall size of .120 inch, this set up is designed to withstand pretty much any abuse you can dish out
Mating the runners to the cylinder head is a flange machined from the same 6061 T6. A full .400 thick, with machined shoulders at the runner interface, allows strong bond at the weld. Jig assembled and Tig welding allows for a flat intake face that will not warp on the engine at the first heat cycle. Machined into the intake to cylinder face of the flange are groves that except the ford intake seals. This allows a prefect, factory like seal between the intake and head, while making replacement parts as close as the local autoparts counter.
The Throttle body flange is also CNC machined and uses a ford mustang seal for perfect fit.
On the bottom of the plenum, we have added a boss that supports the Bosch style MAP sensor. Since this intake was designed for both Atmospheric and Forced Induction, the sensor location was designed to fit both the stock, or 3 BAR sensor. In addition, we have included 4 3/8 NPT tapped holes in the boss for the PCV, Brake Booster, and Purge vacuum lines. The 4th 3/8 NPT hole is used for vacuum/pressure signal for FI installs.
WHAT DOES IT DO????
In the final estimation, a part like this is pretty much only as good as what it can gain for you. To that end, we tested the stock manifold vs the new manifold on one of our EFR turbo cars. The results pretty much speak for themselves; from 4300 RPM th new intake started to gain on the stock set up, with 40 WPH gains at 5500, and a HUGE 100 WHP gain at the 7000 redline.
REQUIRES USE OF AFTERMARKET COLD AIR INTAKE ON NORMAL ATMOSPHERIC APPLICATIONS, AND WILL REQUIRE A 30 DEG THROTTLE TO MAF TUBE COUPLER ON THE FAB9 EFR TURBO KIT
